Howard Anderson established Anderson Winery in 1993, after 30 years experience in the industry - including 15 years as Winemaker at Seppelt Great Western. In 2005 he was joined by his daughter Christobelle, who had completed a Winemaking degree in Adelaide, and worked for several wineries in France. Howard and Christobelle are unashamed perfectionists and take a no compromise approach to everything from the vineyard, to winemaking, to customer service. All wines are made on site, entirely by Howard and Christobelle. Their eight hectare vineyard is planted on Rutherglen's traditional Buckshot clay soil, and is non-irrigated which ensures a low yield of intensely flavoured grapes. Traditional, labour intensive methods including hand harvesting, basket pressing and minimal additives are used alongside modern knowledge to ensure maximum wine quality. They specialise in full bodied reds (particularly Durif) with intense inky colour, full rich mouth filling fruit, and big smooth tannins. Their other specialty is traditionally made white and red sparkling wines. Like the great vintage wines of Champagne, they cellar all their sparklings on yeast lees in the bottle for several years before disgorgement (removal of the yeast), which gives them an extra dimension of complexity, and a lovely smooth, creamy texture....

First established by William Chambers in 1858, the Chambers family has been making wine at Rosewood for over six generations. While the legendary Bill Chambers is often to be found at the cellar door over the weekends, it is his son Stephen, who heads up the winemaking team after taking up the operation in 2001. He has already established an enviable reputation for himself by continuing the tradition of producing highly prized fortified wines such as the Muscat and Muscdadelle famed wine writer Robert Parker Jr described as 'some of the world's most remarkable dessert wines'. The family has been operating from the same site, in the back streets of Rutherglen for 155 years. The first thing you notice on arriving is the impressive array of bottles on the tasting bar, with more than 30 different wines, including Muscadelle, Blue Imperial and Roussanne. Look out for a particularly interesting and rare variety called Gouais, a parent plant of Chardonnay, Riesling and as more recently discovered, up to 80 different varieties. Gooramadda Olives are located just outside of Rutherglen and produce nine varieties of award winning naturally fermented table olives as well as extra virgin olive oils. In a wine region blessed with abundant sunshine, and long languid summers a ride along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail from Rutherglen to the banks of the mighty Murray River in Wahgunyah is a charm. The shortest of all the rail trails, and possibly the flattest. Sip some of Australias oldest wines and trundle past some of the oldest vines over a leisurely nine kilometre ride. Set out early in Summer to avoid the heat or save this little leg for Winter when the crisp sunny blue skies, so well known in the North East, make it a perfect full day activity before cocooning back in your cottage with a local red.
