Whilst the Hay races are a professional meeting, the day has very much a "Picnic Races" atmosphere with numerous groups setting up picnic tables. There are full TAB facilities and Sky Channel available, an undercover betting ring, barbecue, bar facilities and a champagne bar. Bookings for marquees are very popular, for Christmas parties, birthdays or school reunions. Fashions of the Field are another highlight of the day, with a fantastic array of prizes to win for both female and male entrants. Hay Rodeo and Gymkhana Club is one of the oldest rodeo clubs in the state. It hosts the annual Hay Rodeo now as a night Rodeo in February. It always promises to be fun-filled and action packed and hosts some great rodeo action. Highlights include the open bull ride, saddle bronc, ladies barrel race and comedy clowns. AUD10,000 in prize money for competitors. Bar on site, no BYO alcohol permitted. Continuous barbecue food available....

Dunera Museum - Hay Internment and POW Camps Story

Dunera Museum at Hay Railway Station was established in 1999 in air-conditioned carriages at the platform. Since then, 35,000 visitors from 26 countries have visited the museum. The station and precinct was the marshalling yard for 6,600 German, Austrian, Australian, Italian and Japanese civilian internees and Italian and Japanese POWs. They were housed in three camps of 1,000 inmates each between 1940 and 1946. They were guarded by 600 members of the 16th Australian Garrison Battalion. The "Dunera Boys", 1,984 German Austrian, mostly Jewish, refugees, in Britain after escaping from Nazi occupied Europe, became the first internees of British WWII policy. They arrived on 7 September 1940 at Hay Camps Seven and Eight. Their stories are told in the museum with collection exhibits, objects, photographs, memorabilia, and music. Hay Civilian internment (concentration) and POW camps were built and operated by the Australian Government, and funded by the British Government....

Hay War Memorial High School Museum

The Hay War Memorial High School Museum commemorates both Hay and district war service and the life of the school itself in a unique war memorial which has served the Hay community since 1923. As a museum within a school it aims to connect young people today to young people from the past. The Hay War Memorial High School was opened in 1923 as the town's war memorial. It was built to honour those volunteers who lost their lives on active service during Word War I. Of the 641 men who served in World War I, 103 did not return. This impacted greatly on the Hay and district community, who had one of the largest enlistment rates for a small town in Australia The museum's collection preserves the medals, photographs, uniforms, letters and diaries of local servicemen....
