Cairns War Memorial Logo and Images

Cairns War Memorial

The Esplanade, Cairns QLD 4870

Time now stands still but years ago, the Cairns' war memorial kept the far northern city's population punctual. The clock tower on which a soldier statue stands-unique in Queensland-was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1926, 15 months after the foundation stone was laid, at the intersection of Abbott and Shield streets. Costing £2,074, it was the most expensive of soldier statues and the third most costly WWI memorial in Queensland, satisfying not only a desire for a substantial memorial that grabbed public attention but also a long-felt need for a public clock. Marble honour rolls bear 142 locals' names from WWI, including two women. The memorial was relocated in 1972, to The Esplanade, fronting Trinity Bay, opposite the Cairns RSL. At that time, the clock faces were replaced by painted replicas, each set at 4.28, when the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli commenced on the morning of 25 April 1915. A 1940 field gun and an 1887 naval gun now flank the 10.27 metre high memorial.

This intermingling of plant species creates a haven for wildlife, such as the little musky rat-kangaroo, the double-eyed fig-parrot and the endemic chowchilla. The Nandroya Falls circuit track is one of several access points along the Palmerston Highway allowing walkers to explore the ancient rainforest of the southern end of Wooroonooran National Park. At Nandroya Falls, Douglas Creek drops in a narrow, uninterrupted, 50 metre fall from a basalt parapet. Cross the footbridge at the west of the Henrietta Creek camping area. From here it is 2.2 kilometres to the falls by the shortest route. After a short distance the track divides. The branch on the left leads directly to Nandroya Falls, a distance from here of 1.7 kilometres. It winds along the upper valley of Douglas Creek, passing the pretty, 10 metre high Silver Creek Falls on the way. The right-hand branch is a longer 3.5 kilometres route to the falls. Those wishing to do a circuit walk can return by the alternative route. Keep to the walking track at all times and wear sturdy, reliable footwear. Grade: moderate. Distance: 6 kilometres return. Time: allow 2-3 hours walking time for the full circuit.

Cod Hole is known for the groups of large (150 kilograms or more) Potato Cod and Maori Wrasse that have become accustomed to divers over the past 30 years, and will approach quite closely. It's an excellent photo opportunity, these fish are huge! During the months of June and July, Dwarf Minke Whales are found on this section of the reef, and are known to linger in encounters with snorkellers that last for hours. The open ocean isolation also draws in large pelagic fish such as dogtooth tuna, mackerel and barracuda. These reefs are great places to spot sharks of all kinds, especially white tipped reef sharks. Over the past 20 years, feeding by dive operators at certain dive spots has caused the resident reef sharks, potato cod and other fish to become accustomed to divers; they are not skittish and allow close observation. Some operators offer a shark feed dive, where sharks are drawn in to a feeding station. These reefs offer a combination of diving, from dramatic wall dives to intricate coral formations, huge soft corals and reef flats.

A 1940 field gun and an 1887 naval gun now flank the 10.27 metre high memorial....
