Thunderbird Park Logo and Images

Thunderbird Park

Corner of Tamborine Mountain Rd and Cedar Creek Falls Rd, North Tamborine QLD 4272

Adventure joins nature at Thunderbird Park on Tamborine Mountain less than an hour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Come for the day or stay and play. Choose from a range of exciting adventures and on-site accommodation on this 112-hectare rainforest playground. It’s fun for all the family and there is something to suit all age groups.

Hunt for gemstone filled thundereggs formed when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Take the Adventure Parc challenge, its Australia’s highest and longest adventure ropes course; do battle with Laser Skirmish, a fun experience in a jungle setting. Relax in the rainforest, go bushwalking, horse trail riding or swim in the rock pools.
Thunderbird Park is a wildlife and geological oasis. Find treasure in the world's largest thunderegg mine. Thundereggs range from a few grams to over 600 kilograms. Most are filled with agate and other quartz varieties. The mine is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8.30 to 3.30pm, every day during Queensland Public School Holidays and all public holidays except Christmas Day and Good Friday. The admission price includes a mining permit, a pick, shovel, and a bucket to hold the treasure.

The ropes course offers a range of challenges from relatively easy to very strenuous. Choose your challenge and enjoy hours of high adventure. Hang on to the ropes and take a flying fox ride through towering eucalyptus trees, crawl through tunnels, play action movie jungle games and tumble through the air. Choose from a range of adventure games. The course is open to adults and children (height requirements apply). Jump suits and harnesses are supplied, covered footwear must be worn. The ropes course is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, phone 5545 1468 for bookings.

Laser Skirmish is a fun outdoor activity for all ages. It’s like paintball but without the paint (or the pain). Zap your mates with a laser beam in this tactical combat game. Kit up in camouflage gear and face paint. Laser Skirmish games are challenging but safe. Join in a public session or book a private party. It’s great for birthday parties, end of year school break-ups, corporate events, and field trips. Open sessions at Thunderbird Park every Saturday afternoon, bookings essential. Townsville Maritime Museum Limited Logo and Images

Townsville Maritime Museum Limited

42 - 68 Palmer Street, South Townsville QLD 4810

In 2001, the museum opened its doors to the public after a year of extensive refurbishment. With Commonwealth Centenary of Federation funding, the resulting 'ship complex' has attracted a great deal of community support. Located on the southern bank of Ross Creek, the boardwalk overlooks the Townsville motorboat and yacht club, while the entrance gate opens out onto Palmer Street's inviting coffee and restaurant strip.

The original museum was begun by the Seafarers Association to ensure the safe keeping of local maritime cultural history. It was located in the Pier Master's office between berths 4 and 6 at the Townsville port.

To allow for the expanding collection and ease of public access, in 1992 the building was picked up, loaded onto a house-moving trailer and driven down the road to where is standstoday. This was made possible through the generosity of the community and the Port of Townsville, who remain the museum's major sponsors.

Following the arrival of the Bay Rock lighthouse a short time laterm the new 'Seafarers' Gallery was opened in 1994. The museums continues to grow.

The new complex opened in August 2001 and has attracted many local, regional and international visitors.

Nursing Museum RBH

Bowen Bridge Rd, Herston QLD 4006

The Nursing Museum is located on the first two levels of the 1931 wing of Lady Lamington Building, formerly the Nurses’ Home, in the grounds of the Royal Brisbane Hospital. The Lady Lamington Building is heritage listed on the Register of the National Estate, the National Trust Register and the Queensland Heritage Register. Lady Lamington, the wife of the Governor of the day laid the foundation stone on 14 September 1896. Robin S. Dodds was the architect of the original 1896 “L” shaped building. The 1896 building provided accommodation for the Head Nurse, four Charge Nurses, fifty trainee nurses and four servants. A second wing was added to the Nurses\' Home in 1914 providing a further 98 cubicles for nursing staff, mainly trainee nurses.

With the growth of the Brisbane population in the 1930s and the increasing needs of the community during the economic depression, the Brisbane and South Coast Hospital Board appointed Architectural firm, Conrad, Atkinson and Powell to develop a modern hospital on the Herston site. Similarly at this time there was a need to train more nurses to staff the new wards and services buildings. The 1931 building facing the north-east, provided an additional 105 cubicles mainly for trainee nurses bringing the total accommodation provided for nursing staff at that time to 207. This wing has four floor levels and was used as night duty accommodation for the trainees. Sitting rooms, each with a fireplace, were a feature of the two top floors.

Mystery Craters

15 Lines Rd, South Kolan QLD 4670

Visiting the Mystery Craters is a journey of discovery! Halfway between Bundaberg and Gin Gin is Australia's most baffling phenomenon. Since their discovery in 1971, the origins of the 35 oddly shaped craters have remained the subject of controversy. The mottled mixture of sandstone and ochre stain have been the subject of many investigations and various theories have been offered.

Mystery Craters have been featured on many documentaries including Unsolved Mysteries of the World, Getaway, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Great South East, Creek to Coast, Caravan and Motor Home magazine, and more!

A giant mural greets you and as you enter the kiosk some wonderful gifts, souvenirs, and rock samples are on display. Light snacks, coffee, tea, cold drinks, and ice creams are available for your pleasure.
