There are parklands close by for families to use for picnicking. Scarborough is located 21 kilometres north of Wollongong central business district. Scarborough Beach occupies an area of more moderate slope. Down the slope towards the beach are a few houses, a small picnic area, and the surf club. Car parking is limited to the roads and is a problem in summer. Scarborough Beach is an Orange Zone/Time Sharing Dog beach. Time sharing zones allow dog access on the beach on leash in summer before 9am and after 6pm and in winter before 9am and after 4pm.

Scarborough is a coastal suburb located approximately 25 minutes north of Wollongong. Growth took place in the 1880s, spurred by the establishment of coal mining, with villages established around the coalmines. Scarborough was originally known as South Clifton. A hotel opened in the area in 1887 and was named Scarborough Hotel. The South Clifton railway station was renamed Scarborough in October 1903 and the use of the name South Clifton was discontinued.
