Former Victoria Bridge Abutment (Memorial) Logo and Images

Former Victoria Bridge Abutment (Memorial)

74 Stanley Street, South Brisbane QLD 4101

A sandstone bridge abutment adjacent to Victoria Bridge in the South Bank Precinct became a WWI memorial because of a 1918 home-coming tragedy. Greek Australian 11-year-old Hector Vasyli was in the crowd cheering returning soldiers when he was struck and killed by a car in the parade. A marble memorial tablet was unveiled on 8 December 1918. It featured a bronze relief portrait of Hector, by sculptor Daphne Mayo. When a decision was made to build a new bridge, it was decided to retain one abutment on the south side of the 1897 structure-the only bridge at that point able to withstand Brisbane River in flood. Leaving the neoclassical-styled remnant also fulfilled the Brisbane Greek community's wish to maintain the memorial plaque for Hector. During the 1969 demolition, the marble tablet was held by the Greek community. The bronze portrait was lost and replaced. The memorial was reinstated prior to ANZAC Day 1971. A memorial service is held at this site on ANZAC Day.

Tartuffe

Corner of Grey Street and Melbourne Street, South Brisbane QLD 4101

The creep intends to ruin Orgon and walk away with his fortune, his wife and his daughter to boot! But fortunately, Orgon’s family can see right through this devilish impostor. Ribald and riotously irreverent, Tartuffe is about the war of wits between a falsely pious fraud and a family conspiring to catch him with his pants around his ankles. When first performed in the 17th century, French playwright Molière’s sinfully brilliant comedy was damned as such an attack on religious hypocrisy that the Catholic Church called for anyone watching or performing it to be excommunicated. The public, however, loved it – and its pillorying of religious fanaticism and moral weakness will resonate with modern crowds just as keenly....

A testament to its popularity, this once-temporary sign has now become a much-loved permanent landmark in Brisbane. Visitors to the city love to stand near the giant letters and take group photos or capture selfies with the Brisbane skyline behind them. The original BRISBANE sign was designed and installed for the G20 Leaders' Summit in 2014, which saw world leaders such as then-US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel visit the city. It was only intended to sit by the banks of the Brisbane River for one month. The original iteration was built by local volunteers and lasted an impressive four months out in the wind and rain but needed to be replaced by a sturdier replica. The permanent iteration, built to withstand the test of time, has become a must-see in Brisbane. Perched on a wide expanse of green grass near the southern bank of the Brisbane River outside QPAC, the sign is hard to miss. You will find it most easily on foot, either by walking across the Victoria Bridge from the city, down Melbourne Street from South Brisbane or taking a leisurely stroll along the South Bank boardwalk or Clem Jones Promenade. ...
