UNIQUE EXPERIENCES MOUNT MORGAN

Mount Morgan's Coronation Lamp has been the site of the old mining town's ANZAC Day celebrations since 1916. The lamp commemorated the crowning of King Edward VII and honoured Mount Morgan troopers who fought under the Union Jack in the Boer War of southern Africa. Erected in June 1902 at the intersection of East and Morgan Streets, the lamp later became the assembly point for political and union rallies, and during WWI, recruitment campaigns. It also witnessed victory celebrations when the war ended. The lamp is cast iron, standing 4.5 metres high. Originally a gas light, it was out of service after 1924 when gas lights were phased out, and remained unlit until its conversion to electric light in 1933. The lamp was relocated to ANZAC Park in 1947. A further WWI memorial has been built in ANZAC Park- a tall white spire topped with a light. Two German trophy guns flank the memorial, surrounded by Gallipoli pines and gums.

Through audio-visual displays and 3D presentation, experience travel of the past and feel what it was like aboard the old 'rack' system, hauling trains up the steep inclines of the Razorback in the 1800s. Get a sense of the history of rail in Queensland and even see the railway equipment at the former station including a steam train and other rolling stock, goods shed and water tank for steam engines. Named after a former Chairman for the Mount Morgan Council, the Arthur Timms Lookout is the closest lookout to the Mine. This viewing point provides a perfect photo opportunity of the Mine from a distance and a great way to view the spanning township. The views of the old gold mine are spectacular just seeing for yourself the scale of material that was removed during its glory days....

Mount Morgan is a historical mining town nestled on the Dee River a short 38 kilometre drive from Rockhampton. The town is rich in nineteenth century Queensland colonial history and has artefacts and relics from the gold rush days that visitors can experience. Founded as a gold mining town in 1882, Mount Morgan became a vast contributor of gold, silver and copper from the Capricorn region and the mine successfully ran until 1981. William Knox D’Arcy made both fame and fortune in Mount Morgan from his share in the lucrative mine to finance oil exploration overseas which later became BP Company. Also not to be missed is the panoramic view of the township and mines from the Arthur Timms Lookout. Heading downstream, the Dee River boasts a suspension bridge built in the 1890s to provide access from the town to the mine and was one of six swinging bridges at that time in Mount Morgan. However, only one bridge remains today to remind visitors of the colonial days. For an old fashioned yarn, head to the 'Running the Cutter' statue illustrating a famous mining tradition from Mount Morgan. Between 1900 and 1918, buying a beer in 'billy' cans and drinking the beer outside was a common custom for Mount Morgan miners after a day's work that is symbolised in this unique statue....
