The Darling Downs Zoo is situated in a beautiful rural setting on the eastern Downs - midway between Toowoomba and Warwick - just over two hours drive from the Brisbane Central Business District. This award winning boutique style wildlife experience, Kuranda Koala Gardens, is in Kuranda Village right at the Heritage Markets. Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Tours are located at Cedar Creek Estate. Come underground on a journey through the spectacular purpose-built Glow Worm cave! As the name suggests, this hobby farm offers a unique outing for families. You’ll be able to get up close and personal and pat and feed their friendly animals - alpacas, sheep, lambs, goats, geese or perhaps get some pictures of the wandering chooks for your Instagram feed. The Llama Farm is one of a growing number of farm visit experiences you can enjoy in the Ipswich region but with Queensland’s biggest herd of llamas, it’s an experience unlike any other. Visitors can choose a llama to walk with on a lead along a purpose-built trail on the farm which borders the upper reaches of the Brisbane River at Pine Mountain. Many of this herd of 75 have been born and raised here and so are extremely friendly around humans, which is handy if you’re after close-up and selfies. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency. AIMS plays a pivotal role in providing large-scale, long-term and world-class research that helps governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the management of Australia’s marine estate. The Australian Institute of Marine Science's National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) is a world-class marine research aquarium facility for tropical marine organisms in which scientists can conduct cutting-edge research not previously possible in Australia. Members of the public are invited to join a free tour of their Cape Ferguson facility every Friday between March and November. Tours begin at 9.30am and end at approximately 11.45am. They include presentations on AIMS’ current research and a guided walk around the facilities, including a tour of the ‘world’s smartest aquarium’, the National Sea Simulator. Numbers are limited. The highlight of any visit to Tangalooma is the opportunity to hand feed one of the wild bottlenose dolphins that visit the shores each evening at sunset. Moreton Bay is home to approximately 600 bottlenose dolphins and each evening as the sun begins to set across the water, a small pod makes their way to the shores of Tangalooma Island Resort. Since 1992, Resort guests have had the opportunity to hand feed the dolphins as part of the Tangalooma wild dolphin feeding program. Currently up to 13 dolphins frequent the shores of Tangalooma each evening, hunting, surfing and playing with fellow pod members, each with their own distinctive and unique personalities. A dedicated Dolphin Care Team records the dolphins’ behaviour each evening, monitoring growth, behaviour and interactions. Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre showcases some of the incredible biodiversity of Queensland and is home to various reptiles, amphibians, fish and mammals. It features an outdoor walk-through habitat for kangaroos and wallabies and is one of a select few wildlife displays exhibiting one of the world's most fascinating mammals-the platypus. Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre operates a seasonal holiday activities program during Queensland school holidays, four times per year (Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring). Activities include a range of nature-based activities and events for all ages, including Junior Ranger activities and daily Wildlife Discovery Shows. The Centre features an Information Centre, a Wildlife Centre and a wedding/conference centre and cafe. Situated near Cape Bowling Green off the coast between Townsville and Ayr, the SS Yongala is possibly the best wreck dive in the world. The ship, at 110 metres long, is one of the largest, most intact historic shipwrecks, as well as one of the most intriguing maritime mysteries - after sinking in 1911, the SS Yongala lay undiscovered for more than half a century. Due to being the only reef formation in the region, the ship attracts a much higher amount of sea life than other dive sites. Everything about the SS Yongala is massive: huge fish, enormous structures of coral and with so much of the ship still intact, it makes for a stunning sight and one that won’t compare to anything else. Splitters Farm is a 160 acre property bordered by Splitters Creek, a fresh water nature reserve that feeds into Bundaberg’s beautiful Burnett River. Splitters Farm offers 'Meet the Animals' Farm Tours each weekend. Splitters Farm first started in 2017 as a safe haven and sanctuary for rescued farm animals who had been neglected, abused or victims of their owners change of circumstances. Most however, have come to Splitters Farm as the result of drought and the subsequent financial burden for farmers to feed their livestock. Durong Dingo Sanctuary is Queensland's only Dingo Sanctuary including the only Colony of Fraser Island Dingoes in Australia.
