The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency. AIMS plays a pivotal role in providing large-scale, long-term and world-class research that helps governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the management of Australia’s marine estate. The Australian Institute of Marine Science's National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) is a world-class marine research aquarium facility for tropical marine organisms in which scientists can conduct cutting-edge research not previously possible in Australia. Members of the public are invited to join a free tour of their Cape Ferguson facility every Friday between March and November. Tours begin at 9.30am and end at approximately 11.45am. They include presentations on AIMS’ current research and a guided walk around the facilities, including a tour of the ‘world’s smartest aquarium’, the National Sea Simulator. Numbers are limited. Bookings are essential and close at 4pm on the Wednesday before the tour. Sturdy, closed footwear and a hat to protect against the sun are required. They also advise you to bring drinking water. The highlight of any visit to Tangalooma is the opportunity to hand feed one of the wild bottlenose dolphins that visit the shores each evening at sunset. Moreton Bay is home to approximately 600 bottlenose dolphins and each evening as the sun begins to set across the water, a small pod makes their way to the shores of Tangalooma Island Resort. Since 1992, Resort guests have had the opportunity to hand feed the dolphins as part of the Tangalooma wild dolphin feeding program. Currently up to 13 dolphins frequent the shores of Tangalooma each evening, hunting, surfing and playing with fellow pod members, each with their own distinctive and unique personalities. A dedicated Dolphin Care Team records the dolphins’ behaviour each evening, monitoring growth, behaviour and interactions. Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre showcases some of the incredible biodiversity of Queensland and is home to various reptiles, amphibians, fish and mammals. It features an outdoor walk-through habitat for kangaroos and wallabies and is one of a select few wildlife displays exhibiting one of the world's most fascinating mammals-the platypus. Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre operates a seasonal holiday activities program during Queensland school holidays, four times per year (Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring). Activities include a range of nature-based activities and events for all ages, including Junior Ranger activities and daily Wildlife Discovery Shows. The Centre features an Information Centre, a Wildlife Centre and a wedding/conference centre and cafe.
