More than 120 unspoiled islands clustered over 100 kilometres of pristine ocean make up the Abrolhos Islands off Western Australia's mid north coast. Fishing around these spectacular atolls is rated among the best in the world, while bird watching is another popular drawcard. Large breeding colonies of sea birds exist on the islands with more than 90 different species identified. Composed of three groups of 40 islands each, The Abrolhos boasts an incredible range of marine life. Spectacular coral gardens make for excellent diving and snorkelling while sea lions, dolphins and migratory whales are often spotted in the area. The Abrolhos Islands are also rich in maritime history. The infamous Batavia wreck lies on the ocean floor on Morning Reef at the Wallabi group of islands. The Batavia was wrecked in 1629 on her maiden voyage from Holland - the horrendous tale of mutiny and murder is told in the WA Museum in Geraldton. You can reach the Abrolhos Islands by boat charter or scenic flights from Geraldton. Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre

John Cyril Hawes was born at Richmond near London on September 7, 1876 and baptised an Anglican. He qualified as an architect in 1897. In 1911 he converted to Catholicism and studied for the Catholic priesthood. After his ordination in Rome in 1915 he came to the Diocese of Geraldton at the invitation of Bishop William B Kelly. During his 24 years in the Diocese of Geraldton, Monsignor Hawes designed 44 buildings, 29 of which were built. He physically assisted in the construction of five, including the world famous Saint Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Geraldton and Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Mullewa. In 1939 he left for the Bahamas where he lived as a Franciscan hermit on Cat Island until his death in 1956. Monsignor John Cyril Hawes is remembered not only as a priest and an architect but also as a talented craftsman, sculptor, painter, horseman and poet. With tales of murderous mutiny, the Batavia Shipwreck off the coast of Geraldton is one of Western Australia's best known historic dive sites. Coronation Beach is one of the most attractive and popular beaches along the Mid West Coast with both locals and visitors alike. It is considered to be one of the finest windsurfing locations in the world, and outside the windsurfing season Coronation Beach is popular with older visitors, many from interstate. The marked turnoff for Coronation Beach is located approximately 28 kilometres north of Geraldton along the North West Coastal Highway, with the eight kilometre stretch of road to the campsite sealed all the way. There are limited facilities within this nature-based park. Good clean sheltered campsites and picnic shelters are available within a short walking distance to the beach. There are pit toilets and a shower cubicle for using solar shower bags. A communal gas barbecue is provided in the day use area. Please note there is no water or power available. Campers are required to bring their own supplies and generators are welcome, however, conditions apply. Dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash at all times. A caretaker is onsite to assist where possible. Camp fees apply - no booking required. A sign will be placed on the highway if campground is full....

Foreshore Backpackers is a rambling older style guest house offering affordable accommodation for budget minded traveller. Their building front door opens off the main street and our back gate opens onto the beautiful Champion Bay. All of their bedrooms are on the first floor with the back area overseeing the calm waters of Champion Bay. They offer a range of room types from sharing rooms in three, four and six bed combinations to the more private rooms with single, twin and double configurations. All private rooms have been recently renovated and offer televisions, fridges and ceiling fans, they also all have French doors opening either onto a small private balcony over looking the main street or onto the wide verandah over looking the bay. Their dormitory rooms all have ceiling fans and individual bed configurations so no bunks. Each is laid out so everyone has plenty of room whether they be in a three bed or the six bed (has two high individual beds not connected to other beds). Their property offers an enormous communal kitchen and dining area with shared bathrooms upstairs....
