Live life to the full in the fertile lands of Milawa and King Valley, one of Australia's oldest gourmet regions and Victoria's breadbasket.
Victoria's High Country has a history of entrepreneurial and exciting winemaking, which is also reflected in the region's commitment to the freshest produce. A tour of intimate, authentic wineries is sure to include encounters with winemakers and their families and tastings of uncommon Italian varietals like prosecco, nebbiolo, sangiovese and barbera.
With wineries and farm gates located within short distances of each other, there's no better way to see the region than on two wheels. Grab a map from the local Visitor Information Centre, hop on your bike, and pedal between small producers, filling your basket with everything from cheeses and nuts to trout, olives, honey and wine. Pedal past stunning alpine vistas, acres of vineyards and plains of vibrant wildflowers, and be sure to stop in at the local hotspots – Milawa Cheese Factory Café, Milawa Mustards, Brown Brothers and the Olive Shop.
As stunning as it is bounteous, the King Valley is not just for gourmands. Head out on an outdoor adventure holiday while in the area. Choose from bushwalking, cycling and camping, horse riding, fishing and 4WD trips. Gaze out from scenic lookouts, visit misty waterfalls, and watch the sun set over the rugged peaks.
The Queen's Birthday in June becomes a Weekend Fit For A King with a host of wine and food events around the King Valley, while the High Country Harvest unites the entire region for a week of celebrations, workshops and masterclasses.
Milawa is 257 kilometres, or just under three hours by car from Melbourne along the Hume Highway....
