The Channel Heritage Centre is a purpose-built community museum, research library, exhibition gallery and a cafe/shop. It's aim is to promote and preserve the history and heritage of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel area. The museum's displays feature early exploration, aborigines, timber, boat building, fruit growing, fishing, sport, churches, schools, transport and militaria. A shop and three colonial-style rooms display aspects of everyday life in the past. The Electrona Carbide Works was unique in Australia and has it's own display. We also house the Don Norton Camera Collection and two rooms depicting the home life of Dutch migrants in the 1950s. The library has a collection of folders, books, photographs, newspaper clippings, family histories and memorabilia to satisfy the serious researcher and the casual browser. The gallery features displays by local artists and organisations which change monthly. Artwork is often for sale. The shop sells craft and produce made by locals, and the cafe has food and drinks made on site. There are special programs to fit the national curriculum for school groups, by arrangement. Ryan and his family run Grandvewe Cheeses in Birchs Bay, located deep in Tasmania's south. When making cheese, the whey is often discarded and put to little use. Ryan has spent the last two years discovering how to turn the complex sugars held within the whey protein and convert them into a basic sugars to then ferment into alcohol and eventually distil. Herons Rise Vineyard Accommodation is a family-owned vineyard with holiday cottages at Kettering, in southern Tasmania. It is located on hills overlooking the D?Entrecasteaux Channel, a 30-minute drive south of Hobart (34 km). We offer two free-standing, self-contained cottages ? the Studio and the Wine Loft cottages. The Studio is best-suited for a couple (a single bed can be set up for a child), with its bedroom raised from the open-plan living and kitchen area. The Wine Loft is up a flight of steps and has two bedrooms, each with a queen bed. The main bedroom also has a single bed and a further single can easily be set up. Both cottages are spotless, spacious, sunny, warm and private and have rural and sea-views. They have wood-fired heating, which provide warmth and a cosy ambience. Breakfast provisions can be provided for an additional cost. The hosts pride themselves on warm, friendly and personal service and go out of their way to provide useful information. Established in 1984, Heron?s Rise Vineyard produces fine, cool climate Tasmanian wines including Pinot Noir, Rhine Riesling and Muller Thurgau - a German variety developed for colder climates. This variety produces an aromatic wine that develops tropical fruit characters with a little bottle age. The 2005 Heron?s Rise Muller Thurgau was awarded a bronze medal in the Tasmanian Wine Show. You can taste the range of Herons Rise wines at the vineyard by prior arrangement and take home a bottle of the current vintage.
