The architectural history of Maitland can be explored on foot using the heritage walks developed by the Maitland Visitors Information Centre. The city of Maitland's many restored and heritage protected buildings date from as far back as the 1820's and serve as monuments to the pioneering days, when white settlers endeavoured to make their mark on the Hunter Valley's beautiful natural landscapes. The East Maitland Heritage Walk takes two and a half hours to walk, or twenty minutes to drive. Attractions include Caroline Chisholm's cottage (1840), St. Peter's Church of England (1886) and 27 other old buildings and sites. Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) is situated in the Hunter region, 30 minutes west of Newcastle. It sits east of the Hunter Valley Vineyards and a very short distance from the Maitland Visitor Information Centre. Steeped in history, the federation gothic building housing Maitland Regional Art Gallery is an awe inspiring example of early 1900's architecture. Officially opened in 1910, the building was constructed to house the Maitland Technical College, which it continued to do until 1987. The MRAG Collection comprises more than 2800 paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and limited edition prints, by Australian and international artists.
