Lion of Waterloo Tavern

89 Montefiores Street, Wellington NSW 2820
The Lion of Waterloo is one of the original hotels in the area, dating back to 1841. Numerous coaches stopped at this hotel after crossing the Macquarie River. It was a successful business venture and attracted settlers, station hands and later minters. After their horses had been changed and passengers refreshed, Cobb and Co crossed the Bell River behind the Lion and today you can have a picnic in the park at the crossing and imagine what a sight the coach must have made as it ploughed its way through the water. The Tavern still welcomes visitors and has some interesting history of its own (in 1854, it is said to have witnessed the last known duel in Australia). Bell River Estate has always taken a traditional approach to wine making, producing small volumes of table and fortified wines from Estate grown grapes and grapes grown in the local area - a combination of commercial growers and small land holders with an interest in growing their own wine grapes.

The aim is to produce quality wines which reflect the grape growing conditions rather than commercial uniformity
The warmer climate of Neurea allows grapes to develop a higher sugar content perfect for the production of fortified wines (formally called ports) including tawny and liqueur muscat for which Bell River Estate has become well known.
