Lamington National Park, Binna Burra Section

via Nerang, Beechmont QLD 4211

Binna Burra, Lamington National Park, with beautiful waterfalls and more than 160 kilometres of walking trails, is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, the most extensive subtropical rainforest in the world. Declared in 1915, Lamington was saved from the logging and farming that changed much of the McPherson Range. It protects Antarctic Beech, wildflowers and rare wildlife, such as the spotted-tailed quoll and Albert's lyrebird. There are two sections to Lamington: Binna Burra and Green Mountains. Both offer great bushwalking, birdwatching and camping opportunities. Stay at the Binna Burra resort or in the privately-run campground. Explore the 21.4 kilometre Border track, built in the late 1930s. From Bellbird lookout, see Turtle Rock, Egg Rock and Numinbah Valley, examples of natural erosion. Walk the Caves circuit for views of Coomera Valley. In the picnic area (wheelchair-accessible toilets), look for Richmond birdwing butterflies, orchids and king parrots.

Beechmont

Life's a beach, (or should that be beech?), for the laid-back residents in this quaint country village which sits smugly between the Lamington Plateau and Tamborine Mountain. First settlers flocked to the area in the 1800s and used the white beech trees, once prolific here, for timber. These days, this pretty village is a popular destination for bushwalkers who travel through the town enroute to the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park. It's also a popular place for hangliders and paragliders who are enamoured with the popular launch pad at Rosin's Lookout. Because of its small population, Beechmont exudes the kind of country charm that should be bottled with its old-style community hall and country markets. Stay overnight in an old church or at an educational farm stay. Enjoy local wildlife, Graceleigh Park and most of all, the views and walking options of the nearby mountains and rainforest. The local Yugambeh people loved this area, 45 minutes and a world away from the Gold Coast beaches, and you will too....

Mudgeeraba

Railway Street, Mudgeeraba QLD 4213
This town is a bit of a tongue twister but the once you wrap your mouth around the name, it's well worth a visit. For this is a pretty village, which skirts the fringes of the Gold Coast and sits patiently at the foot of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Old Gold Coasters believe Mudgeeraba remains relatively untouched by tourism and this is one of its many charms. Certainly, the original Mudgeeraba Hotel built in 1884 still remains, although these days its name has changed to the Wallaby Hotel. Many credit the opening of this watering hole, both for horses and passengers, for the impetus around which the village was built and today, the old world charm remains. The Mudgeeraba Farmers Markets are believed to be the oldest on the Gold Coast and home to local produce, coffee, jams, cheese, wine and baked goods from around the area. There's also quaint restaurants, bed and breakfasts, cafes and art and craft galleries in this lovely area which eventually winds its way up towards Springbrook National Park.
