The Old Wentworth Gaol took three years to build from 1879 and while it was not a place of comfort it was considered a slight step up from the usual lock-ups used before its opening.
Times were definitely tough for the early settlers, and for those who fell on the wrong side of the law they were even tougher.
The gaol closed in 1927, and it was a single storey brick building constructed from locally made clay bricks and featured bluestone trim brought in from Malmsbuy in Victoria.
What makes the gaol so unique is that it was the first Australian designed gaol, designed by colonial architect James Barnett. After its closure the gaol was used for a variety of activities, including classrooms for the Wentworth Central School. Today it is a major tourist attraction for the town.
Visitors can find out more about the history of the building with a self guided tour. The tour takes you inside the buildings and provides an insight into life as a prisoner in the late 1800s.
There is a gift shop which once served as the gaolers residence, where you can purchase souvenirs, old wares and antiques.
Coaches and group bookings welcome. The Old Wentworth Gaol is located in Beverley Street. For more information please contact Old Wentworth Gaol.

The Jindera Pioneer Museum is contained within a remarkable old store and home that belonged to the pioneering Wagner family. The 'store' is stocked with authentic goods of the 19th century, while the living area at the rear is furnished in its original style. Wagner's store operated into the 1950s and after it closed, a decision was taken to create the museum. All items were donated by local pioneering families. Sir Russell Drysdale declared the Jindera Museum open in 1968.
The Jindera Pioneer Museum consists of the store and house, two large galleries, authentically furnished slab hut and wattle daub cottage, a remarkable collection of farm implements and equipment and an 1872 era blacksmith shop, all set in two hectares of grounds.
Afternoon teas (Devonshire) available weekends, afternoons, or by special arrangement anytime.

Jindera was gazetted in 1869 with 126 acres set aside for the village. The first Post Office opened a year later and Jindera soon grew into a prosperous town that at one stage featured a hospital, two schools, four hotels, parks and sporting facilities. There was even a racetrack opposite the location of the original public school.
When 56 German settlers arrived in the 1860's from South Australia, they camped at the Four Mile Creek to access a good supply of running water. A Pioneer Cairn has been erected on the site of that original camp.
By the end of the 1880's, the town had a Church of England, a Lutheran church and even a Lutheran school that taught exclusively in German.
A must see is the Jindera Pioneer Museum which was opened by Sir Russell Drysdale in 1968, and shortly after was classified by the National Trust.
Jindera’s main recreation reserve is also centrally located with facilities for football, cricket, tennis, netball, swimming and a skate park. A golf course is located northeast of the town. The Jindera Wetland is a haven for native birds and animals as well as a relaxing recreational walk....
The heritage walk will take you to 24 sites within the village of Jindera on which there was a business or important location during the development of Jindera in it’s past 150 year history. The walk is approximately three kilometres and can be done, in the majority, on footpaths around the village. A smaller version would be to take in the three main street blocks of the village which would capture 17 sites.
