The Yackandandah Museum has a large and comprehensive collection of the many stories from the district. The Museum is set in the old Bank of Victoria which includes the managers cottage at the rear of the premises. The exhibition includes a catalogue of photographs, images, objects, registers, documents, letters and research material to explore the bygone era. As you wander around the exhibits you will learn about the town and the folk who made Yackandandah what it is today.

Just a short two kilometre walk from the town centre is the historic Yackandandah Gorge. Construction of the gorge began in 1859 to act as a trail race to sluice gravel and sand from up stream. The cutting through the granite was constructed by hand using pick and shovel. During the 1880s it was deepened and lengthened using dynamite. The walk to the gorge takes you beside the creek weaving in and out of the woodlands before arriving at the open area at the gorge. The walk is an easy level suitable for those with an average fitness level, not suitable for wheel chairs. For those not wishing to take the full trail, there is a short walk from the Bells Flat Road car park.

Yackandandah Gorge Scenic Walk

The Gorge Walk will take you along the historic gorge, built as a tail race to sluice gravel and sand in the hope of finding gold. The original cutting was made by pick, shovel and blasting powder, but was later deepened using dynamite creating the gorge you see today. The scenic walk takes you along the twisting trail beside the creek with its cascading waterfalls and shady trees overhanging the trail. For those unable to take the full trail there is access to the gorge from Bells Flat Road. The trail is sign posted from the car park and takes about five minutes. If you are feeling more energetic, you can walk along Yackandandah Creek from the town, which takes about an hour. The top of the Gorge is steep and requires the walker to be sure footed and moderately fit. There is a sign post and car park with information signs at the start of the walk. Gold panning is no longer allowed in the Yackandandah Creek. If you wish to pan for gold in the area there are maps available from the Visitor Information Centre in town. Don’t forget to buy a licence before heading out....

Yack Station Arts Hub is a unique space that has been created for local artists to work in and display their artwork. The building which has been purpose built from predominantly recycled and re-purposed building materials provides small studio spaces for local artists from Yackandandah and the surrounding area as well as a gallery shop of local and Australian artwork. Visitors to the Arts Hub have the opportunity to purchase many original art pieces on site. Workshops in various art mediums are held on a regular weekly or monthly basis . These include but are not limited to clay building, ceramics, calligraphy, spinning and weaving, jewellery making with polymer clay. The tranquil location is the site of the old Yackandandah Railway which is no longer operational. A small railway museum is located in a re-purposed guards van which is built into the main building structure . Allans Flat Reserve is approximately eight kilometres from Yackandandah, heading north east on the Yackandandah-Wodonga Road. The lake at the reserve is a popular swimming hole for locals, created during the gold rush days from dredge mining. Take your own picnic and shade and enjoy a cool swim during warm summer days and evenings. Allan’s Flat Reserve is managed as a Family Fishing Lake and stocked twice yearly with rainbow trout and annually with golden perch. The lake was created by gold dredging operations. A Recreational Fishing Licence is required unless you are under 18 years or over 70 years old. Contact the Yackandandah Visitor Informationn Centre for a list of retailers where licences can be purchased and information on bait and tackle supplies. The turn-off is easy to miss so keep an eye-out for the unmade road that is the entrance to the Reserve....

With the discovery of gold in 1852 and the increase of population in the immediate vicinity of Yackandandah, a town cemetery would have soon been essential. A wander around the Yackandandah Cemetery evokes memories of a bygone era of hardship and gold mining. The first burial recorded was of 14 month old Ellen Anderson on 7 September 1859. The oldest remaining headstone belongs to James Stewart, a miner, buried 30 March 1860, aged 28. There is a Chinese Section with 26 known burials between 1860 and 1903, again a reminder of the thousands of Chinese that lived and worked on the gold diggings. ...

Today, in and around Yackandandah, Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen, the legacy of the rush for gold remains. The Indigo Gold Trail takes in some of the most picturesque countryside in Australia and includes scores of easily accessible sites identified by storyboards featuring the Gold Trail logo.
