Also known as Sunset Ridge trail, it’s a spectacular hike if you’re into rugged scenery and enjoy a challenging walk. Very steep in sections, however the breathtaking scenic views in every direction make it well worth the effort. Time this walk in the afternoon for one of the most beautiful sunsets you’re likely to experience. Following the red markers as you climb the ridge, look for wedge tailed eagles and pink cockatoos. A birdwatching paradise, corellas and finches are often seen flitting through the mallee scrub. As you clamber up, drink in the views all around you. From the vast western desert plains to the dramatic gorges and rich red ochres of the Byngnano Range to the east, you’ll feel on top of the world. The short drive takes in the ruins of the Rockholes Hotel that was built to accommodate passing trade between the two towns, as well as spectacular rock formations like Wana Karnu and Split Rock. Also along the drive you’ll find great spots for viewing the kangaroos, wallaroos and emus that live in the park. After a 10km drive to the end of the road, you’ll see that Split Rock is a 3km walk from the carpark, so come prepared for a bit of bushwalking and plenty of photo opportunities....

Mutawintji Gorge walking track takes you on a hike through one of the park’s most scenic gorges. Enjoy a picnic at the end or simply spend some time taking in the view. Explore the spectacular rangeland country of Mutawintji National Park along Mutawintji Gorge walking track. Your journey through one of the park’s most scenic gorges ends at a peaceful pool surrounded by soaring red cliffs. It’s a moderately challenging walk, and at three hours return makes for a good day hike. You can spend as long as you like at the pool, admiring the beauty of this special country and taking in the scenic view. You could even take some lunch and a thermos to enjoy an outback picnic....
