Starting at one of the most spectacular and popular rest stops on the NSW Central Coast – Somersby Falls picnic area – Somersby Falls walking track winds down to the bottom of the falls along a graceful 100 metre path, with lookout stops along the way. This is a great walk at any time of year, but it really shines in the summer months, when the cool spray offers a respite from the heat, and after heavy rains, when the falls are particularly striking. Be sure to bring your camera and keep an eye out for local wildlife, including water dragons, frogs and goannas. If you look up, you may even spot a kookaburra – birdwatching is terrific here, so don’t forget binoculars either. After visiting the bottom of the falls, return to the picnic area and pass the remainder of the day in the cool shade of a tree over a long lunch....

The iconic and much-loved Great North walk is a 250 kilometre track that runs between Sydney and Newcastle in NSW. In Palm Grove Nature Reserve, visitors can enjoy a picturesque sample of this walk, making it either a great self-contained bushwalk or part of a bigger walking adventure. The trail’s scenic views begin at the end of Kilkenny Road on the Somersby Plateau and finish on Ourimbah Creek Road, Palm Grove. Meander through open forests before descending into the cool moist rainforest over a pristine creek. The track is undulating with some small, steep sections and a creek crossing. It’s a short, accessible walk that brings you to a beautiful forested area, where you can enjoy birdwatching and wildlife photography. The calls of the frogs that call the area home can be heard throughout the reserve, particularly after heavy rain. Interpretative signs located along the track provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the plants and animals found along the way and encourage you to explore the environment through your sense of smell, hearing and touch. Girrakool loop track is a short and easy walk that starts and finishes at Girrakool picnic area. It offers scenic views over waterfalls and is full of colourful wildflowers during late winter and early spring. Definitely not for the fainthearted, this challenging steep track is ideal for adventurous bushwalkers and mountain bikers who love to test themselves. Dubbo Gully trail leads through rugged and remote bushland along a section of World Heritage-listed Old Great North Road - World Heritage walk, built by convicts between 1826 and 1836. Starting at Mangrove Mountain, you’ll wind through Dubbo Gully passing open fields and a historic old cemetery. Arriving at Old Great North Road, look for Clares Bridge, the second oldest bridge on the mainland. With a flat grassy area Ten Mile Hollow campground is a nice spot for a picnic lunch along the way, or you might be tempted to pitch your tent and spend a night under the stars. There’s plenty to see while bushwalking along Dubbo Gully loop trail. It is a clearly signposted track with diverse landscapes which come alive in the spring with cream flowering sydney red gums and striking red gymea lilies. You might even see a swamp wallaby hopping across the path....
