Melbourne was founded on the east-west axis of the Yarra River. At first, the north bank was developed with commercial and residential buildings, and land on the south bank left largely vacant. After the Swanston St-Princes Bridge-St Kilda Road line formed a north-south axis, the sloping land to the south-east, bounded by the river, Anderson St, Domain Rd and St Kilda Road, was set apart in 1841 as the Domain parkland, including a reserve for a future Government House. When Ferdinand von Mueller was appointed Director of the Botanic Gardens in 1857, he was in charge of landscaping the whole Domain, including the reserve, as one parkland.

Conical is an independent contemporary art space that supports the production and presentation of new work by local and international artists.
With an interest in spatial, temporal and conceptual movements in visual art, Conical’s focus is on site-related activities, particularly those that embrace transient and fragmented responses to place.
Emphasising a reciprocal exchange between artist and organization, Conical acts as an integral agent in the process of realizing exhibitions and projects.
An opportunity is provided for both independent and represented artists to test or consolidate their practice. The provision of time, space and dialogue encourages risk and criticality.
Over the past decade Conical has continued to evolve its operational model in response to the currencies of contemporary discourse. Director, Adrien Allen, shapes a flexible program of exhibitions and projects – both internally curated and application based.

Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi has been exhibiting contemporary Australian Aboriginal art since 1983. The Gallery represents the work of artists from communities including Balgo Hills, Amata, Papunya Tula, Maningrida and Turkey Creek, as well as work by the most innovative city-based painters, photographers, video artists and installation artists such as Julie Gough, Leah King-Smith and Christian Thompson. The Gallery is also renowned for promoting the careers of lesser-known artists.
Samantha Pizzi assumed the reins at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi following her mother Gabrielle's death in 2004. Gabrielle Pizzi had represented indigenous artists both nationally and internationally since the early 1980s. Her daughter has maintained the gallery's respected standing in the indigenous and visual art communities.
The original gallery space had become something of an institution. It was at that space that Gabrielle Pizzi had brought the work of such artists as Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri and Emily Kam Kngwarraye to the notice of the world. And in an industry renowned for exploitation, it was a space renowned for its integrity.
Gertrude Contemporary is valued nationally and respected internationally as a dynamic centre for the production and presentation of contemporary art. With the artist placed firmly at the centre of our community, we foster a culture of risk, collaboration and critical-thinking to generate innovative programs that engage audiences in creative exchange.
