Narooma Visitors Centre, Princes Highway, Narooma NSW 2546

Come and discover the history of Narooma at the Narooma Lighthouse Museum, located at the Narooma Visitor Centre. The key piece of the Narooma Lighthouse Museum is the original light and optical apparatus from the Montague Island Light station. This Light station was the last manned in NSW and is still the only remaining occupied light station on the NSW coast. The light and optical apparatus were constructed by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, suppliers of most lighthouse equipment for colonial governments at the time. The light was first lit on 6 October 1881 and was used for almost 105 years, with its final manual lighting occurring 14 September 1986. The light and optical apparatus were removed from Montague Island when the light was automated. A detailed interpretive display 'Mainland to Island' and a collection of items have been developed around the theme of this central piece.

How to get there: Charter boats go out to the island regularly and tours can be booked for just snorkelling or combined with a tour of Montague Island which you can visit as a day trip or for a two night stay in the refurbished lighthouse keeper's quarters. One of the greatest snorkelling adventures in the Eurobodalla is a trip out to Montague Island to snorkel and swim with the seals. Depending on the season, between 400 and 2000 New Zealand and Australian fur seals inhabit the iconic granite rocks that distinguish this special wildlife sanctuary, looked after by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The island is a destination for eco-tourists, whale watchers, lighthouse history buffs and divers looking for the endangered Grey Nurse Shark. Less well known is the unique opportunity to snorkel with the playful and curious island seals. Much of the water around the island is deep, so experience and confidence is a must, as is good weather, but the encounter with nature and the surreal view of the underwater kelp forest makes this a once-in-a-lifetime experience....

Narooma

78A Princes Highway, Narooma NSW 2546
There are no English words to properly convey the colours of Wagonga Inlet. The word Narooma, derived from the Yuin term for ‘clear blue water’ seems to fit best, with the vibrant hues of the waterway the first thing seen by visitors arriving from the north. The timber boatsheds tucked beside the bridge offer fresh local oysters and seafood direct to the public, with oysters shucked in front of you if you’d like to eat them then and there. Eurobodalla sits at the heart of Australia’s Oyster Coast, which is celebrated in style each May with the annual Narooma Oyster Festival. The southern side of the breakwater offers equally rewarding exploration. To get there, take a scenic drive through town and along Bluewater Drive to Bar Rock Road. Home of the famous Australia Rock, the area is a favoured place for local fur seals to relax in the sun. The lookout here gives extensive water views to Barunguba (Montague island) one of Australia’s top destinations for a snorkel or dive with seals. Australian fur seals have a reputation as funsters and seem to enjoy engaging with the strange land creatures who regularly drop in. For those who prefer to stay above water, Montague Island makes a great day trip, with whales, dolphins, flying fish and over 90 species of bird calling the area home throughout the year. The granite lighthouse on the Island is almost 140 years old and retains most of its original features. Climbing the original winding stairs provides outstanding 360 degree views and a chance to spot passing whales. For a unique overnight stay, accommodation is offered in both the lighthouse keeper’s, and assistant lighthouse keeper’s cottages. The fishing around Narooma is superb and can be as easy as casting a line from the shore. The waters here are productive year-round with the estuary offering bream, flathead and leatherjacket, and the ocean reefs providing snapper, morwong, wrasse, trevally, and kingfish. Game fishing here is internationally renowned with yellowfin tuna, albacore, and striped and black Marlin found closer to the continental shelf....

From the 1920's, Narooma's stylish guest houses attracted Sydney professionals and farmers and graziers from 'out west'. Camping along the foreshore was popular from the 1920's. Tourism is now Narooma's main industry.
