Like much of this area of the South Coast, Wandandian was historically a timber-milling town. One small timber mill remains but its rural atmosphere is retained with hobby farms, fruit orchards and a vineyard.
Located on the Princes Highway, this small village is a great place to stop to refuel and recharge. Its name most likely comes from the name of the Aboriginal tribe, but locals prefer the more romantic translation: "home of lost lovers"....
This quiet bushland spot serves up a perfect setting for lazy afternoons with the family, or even a solo retreat beneath the casuarina trees of Wandandian Creek. Right by the water, there are picnic tables and pump-out toilets – just enough to make a visit convenient without destroying the tranquil atmosphere. Birds frolic through the canopy and there are enough fish in the creek to make this a popular haunt of fishermen.
Pack a picnic lunch and kick back with a weekend newspaper, or bring a kayak for something a little more active – a launching platform gives easy access to the undisturbed waterway. There are even some walking routes - Anabranch loop track and Delta track - which leave directly from the picnic area and offer great opportunities for some light exercise to work up an appetite. Take a stroll and then reward yourself with the rest of the day off, paddling in the water and enjoying the sun....
Corramy Regional Park protects several threatened species while offering visitors a natural playground, with everything on offer from picnicking and walking to kayaking.
Created in 2010, Corramy Regional Park offers visitors a natural playground in a tidy package of 292ha. Not far from suburbia, it protects several species of threatened trees and plays host to endangered birds like the glossy black cockatoo. There’s scenic swamp oak forest and a variety of eucalypts, spilling shade over attractive clearings tailor-made for picnicking.
Indeed, Corramy manages to protect our natural diversity while offering compelling reasons to bring the whole family. Pack a lunch and visit for a lazy afternoon, or bring the kayak and make a day of it. Proving size isn’t everything, this small park packs some big opportunities, whether your preference is fishing, walking, or watersports. Along with stunning bushland, there’s Wandandian Creek and the quiet shoreline of St Georges Basin.
Corramy is largely a local haunt, with people from the villages between Nowra and Ulladulla making the most of their weekends in this natural gem. But anybody is welcome, and one visit is all it takes to have you coming back again and again....
If you’re looking to make the most out of Wandandian Creek without getting on the water in a kayak, Delta track offers a compelling reason to break out the walking shoes. Hugging the creek foreshore for 1.5 kilometres, this walk over gentle hills is a good option for families or anybody with a moderate level of fitness.
Passing two small beaches as it twists through eucalypts and scrub brush, Delta track offers opportunities to fish in the creek, plus terrific birdwatching the entire way. Glossy black cockatoos have been sighted in the area. Don’t forget to look down, too - those small holes along the track are made by elusive long-nosed bandicoots. Bring a camera just in case.
After completing Delta track, settle down at the picnic area for a leisurely lunch, or consider extending your walk to take in the shorter Anabranch loop track as well....
Located on the Great Eastern Escarpment of NSW near Nowra, Jerrawangala National Park offers scenic views and opportunities for taking a 4WD tour, cycling and hiking.
With steep cliffs stretching all along its eastern edge, Jerrawangala National Park, just southwest of Nowra on the Great Eastern Escarpment, offers some astonishing scenic views. Particularly breathtaking are the expansive vistas of the coastline and hinterland that can be seen from Jerrawangala lookout.
Follow management trails through the park’s lovely patchwork of low forest, woodlands and moist heath on the plateau, contrasting with tall spotted gum at the northern end of the park and rainforest in sheltered gullies along the eastern edge. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting unique and threatened species in the park, such as the noisy gang-gang cockatoos or sooty owls.
The park is best-suited to independent, self-reliant bushwalkers, due to its abundance of unmarked but easily traversable trails. It’s also popular with cycling, motorcycling and 4WD enthusiasts, who frequently travel through the park to the adjacent Yerriyong State Forest. The park also borders a popular reserve, Morton National Park....
