National Cartoon Gallery at The Bunker Logo and Images

National Cartoon Gallery at The Bunker

John Chapman Way, off City Hill Drive, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450
The National Cartoon Gallery is Australia’s only dedicated cartoon gallery exhibiting the largest private collection of contemporary cartoons in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Gallery is housed in an authentic underground WWII bunker that has been converted to a funky exhibition space.

This metamorphosis from a bunker to a gallery, is largely thanks to the Coffs City Rotary Club and in particular, two drivers of the project, Tom Hamilton-Foster and the late John Champion. Their work in acquiring sponsorships and local business funding enabled the restoration of the building to proceed. Their caricatures are proudly displayed in the Gallery’s foyer.

Today, the Gallery is custodian of the Coffs Cartoon Collection, with well over 23,000 cartoons from leading Australian and international cartoonists including private donations and bequeaths of rare works. Its role, although different to its wartime past, is still one of communicator and protector of Australia’s history, albeit in satirical form.

The Bunker Cartoon Gallery Inc. continues to run the National Cartoon Gallery today. It is a not-for-profit, registered charity with charitable gift recipient status granted by the Taxation office.

The Gallery has been the recipient of many awards, including the distinguished Stanley Award presented by the Australian Cartoonists Association (ACA) for outstanding contribution to cartooning and North Coast NSW Tourism Awards for Heritage and Culture. The Gallery boasts a great team of volunteers who play an important part in the daily running of the Gallery and ensuring its future.

Coffs Harbour Marina and Jetty Area

1 Marina Drive, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450
The old timber jetty in the harbour is the place to promenade, sit and fish, photograph sunrise or watch swimmers, seabirds, fishing boats, canoe paddlers and cruising yachts come and go. At the adjacent marina, the fishing fleet and boats go about their daily routine - landing fish or getting ready to venture out for more. Whale watch boats in season (June to November) set out on their expeditions with excited passengers while other folk sip latte at the marina cafe or snack on fish and chips from the Fishermen's Co-op. The marina breakwall now joins the mainland to the once isolated Muttonbird Island. This allows pedestrian access to viewing platforms at the top and eastern end of the island. From the top the panorama is 360 degrees - ocean, islands, marina and mountains. At the eastern end, the scene is of rocky coast, harbour entrance and the Pacific horizon.
