Montville Memorial Precinct Logo and Images

Montville Memorial Precinct

Razorback Road , Corner of Main Street (Montville-Mapleton Road), Montville QLD 4560

Beyond Montville's galleries, eateries and curio shops, there's a village green with a story to tell of what happens to a community when its country goes to war. The Montville Memorial precinct is flanked by the 1921 memorial gates and a sentry of six trees. It includes two memorial halls, accessed by a short street called Memorial Close. Montville had developed barely 20 years before the war. It was a small rural community with 55 farmers and dairymen and their families: about 40 men went off to war. War memorials with their marble rolls of honour provide a local perspective of community patriotism that military records can't, and Montville's adds another dimension. It includes the names of all of those who volunteered. School children planted the trees as an Arbour Day project in 1923. Rolls of honour for both world wars are on the wall in Montville Hall, the larger of the buildings. The smaller building, now called Montville Memorial Hall, St Mary's Hall and Community Centre, was built in 1941 as a club room for returned WWI veterans. Montville's Memorial Park is the setting for annual ANZAC Day ceremonies and its halls are used year-round.

Witta

Witta, Witta QLD 4552
Fresh air, peace and tranquillity. That's what is on offer in the small hamlet of Witta. Witta, once known as Teutoburgh in the 1880s, was first settled by German immigrants. The name Teutoburgh came from a nearby German mission. Witta offers the chance to stroll the few streets that make up the little village and take in some fresh air or perhaps drop into the general store. By the way, the general store is also the only store in town. Nonetheless it is a fine place to start to explore a town that has more on offer than it might first seem. Although the general store is a modern building, the owner, George Soady, says there was once an older store on that site. Further down the road from the store is the original Witta School. The Witta School is now a community facility with toilets, shady areas and picnic tables. Across the way from the school, the Witta Recreational Club has a children's playground and a large playing field. But Witta's best-kept secrets are twofold. Just across the road from the store is what the locals boast is the best view of the head of the Mary Valley that gives rise to the Mary River. The second secret is historical - the old Witta Cemetery. A walk around Witta Cemetery proffers a snapshot of the early settlers. Scattered across the cemetery are the names of the first German families who settled at Witta. Curiously, pictures or symbols accompany many of the inscriptions on the gravestones. The symbols indicate the interests of the deceased like musical notes, piano, horserider, fisherman and sailing ships. Then there are epitaphs like 'It's not the first game that counts, it's the last one.'...

Kondalilla Falls Circuit, Kondalilla National Park

Kondalilla National Park, Montville QLD 4560
Explore this beautiful walking track that leads from Kondalilla Falls down the escarpment into a lush rainforested valley then climbs up the ridge again to return. From the Kondalilla Falls car park, walk 100-metres downhill (with steps) to a large grassed picnic area with barbecues, picnic tables and toilets. Laze over a picnic then set out for a scenic walk. Follow the Picnic Creek circuit, walking through rainforest and open forest to a cool rock pool at the top of the falls. Continue on the Kondalilla Falls circuit, descending into lush rainforest as you walk down to the valley for the best waterfall view at the base of the falls. What goes down must come back up! As you climb the ridge, look for emergent bunya pines with their distinctive symmetrical dome shapes, dense stands of piccabeen palms and intriguing shapes of pink ash. There are over 300 stairs on the Kondalilla Falls circuit so you need to be reasonably fit and allow enough time to enjoy this steep walk. Leave enough time to complete your walk in daylight hours. This walk is a Grade 3 track (formed track, may have short steep hills and many steps, some experience recommended)....
