The Waratah Museum, at Waratah in Tasmania's northwest, tells the west coast mining story. Waratah is a three-hour drive west of Launceston (232 kilometres) and about 45 minutes south of Burnie (58 kilometres). The Museum is located in Waratah's historic former courthouse and council chambers. It offers a collection of memorabilia and photographs of the town's tin mining history. Waratah was established in 1871 when pioneer James 'Philosopher' Smith discovered the Mount Bischoff tin deposit. During the 1880s Mount Bischoff was reputed to be the southern hemisphere's richest tin mine. At the mine's peak, the population of Waratah swelled to about 3,000 people. Waratah has a number of good examples of 19th century architecture, including a replica of the type of hut lived in by 'Philosopher' Smith's, located beside the Museum. The hunt is typical of the simple dwellings used by local miners in this era. You can visit the charming St James Anglican Church, the old post office or enjoy a drink at the Bischoff Hotel. Visit Lake Waratah and the Waratah Falls, or follow the walking trails to the old power house, Mount Bischoff and the ghost town of Magnet, once the site of the Magnet silver mine.

Tarkine Forest Reserve

This huge area of temperate rainforest is home to mountain ranges, wild rivers, buttongrass moorlands and a rugged coastline with long sandy beaches and coastal heath. There's a rich variety of animals in the reserve including platypus, echidna, wombat, bandicoot, possum and glider - not to mention the famous Tasmanian Devil and Tasmania's other carnivorous predators, the Spotted-tailed Quoll and Eastern Quoll. The Tarkine also hosts over a hundred bird species, including several rare and endemic birds such as the threatened Orange-bellied Parrot. The settlement of Arthur River on the border of the reserve is the starting point for beach and forest journeys and adventures. Waterways can be explored by canoe, kayak and riverboat cruises through forests of blackwood, myrtle and celery top pine. There are numerous walking trails from Arthur River and at various stops along the nearby South Arthur Forest drive, including the Celery Top pine nature trail and the Balfour Track rainforest walk. Further south, the Western Explorer touring route winds its way to the tiny settlement of Corinna on the Pieman River, where the Fat Man punt carries cars across the river to continue their journey south.

Hellyer Gorge

Make your way via Hellyer Gorge for a spectacular scenic route to the West Coast or Cradle Mountain. The windy route and steep cliffs make for a jaw-dropping wilderness drive, and is a favourite route for bike riders and touring cars. The welcoming canopy of rainforest provides a spectacular picnic spot along the banks of the Hellyer River. There are toilet and barbecue facilities, and the picnic area is the starting point for two short walks: the River Walk and the Old Myrtle Forest Walk. Follow this through Hellyer Gorge and on to the historic town of Waratah, the iconic Cradle Mountain or the wild West Coast.

Dudley Kenworthy was a local character who continued prospecting for tin near Mount Bischoff mine after it closed in the 1940s. Visitors can view the separation process for themselves with the push of a button. Entry is by donation.
