Situated 15 kilometres from Murgon in the South Burnett, Lake Barambah, also known as Bjelke-Petersen Dam, is a popular area for recreational freshwater fishing, boating, picnicking and camping, with facilities many would envy. Picnic areas, barbecues, and a boat ramp with large car park make this the ideal place to wet a line. The Bjelke-Petersen Dam covers 2,500 hectares, and holds 1,450,000 megalitres of water, used for irrigation and water supply to the towns of Murgon and Cherbourg. Koalas, wallabies and kangaroos can be seen around the lake while the birdlife includes black swans, ducks, pelicans and cormorants. Bjelke-Petersen Dam hosts a major annual fishing competition, over the first weekend in October, attracting thousands of anglers - all seeking that elusive 'biggest catch'.

Dubbed 'the art heart of the South Burnett', the Wondai Gallery is sure to surprise and impress. Prominently situated on the roundabout, behind the eye-catching dingo sculptures and rock pool, the building now housing the gallery was the original Stationmaster's residence, dating back to the early 1900s. It has been lowered and tastefully renovated, while retaining its old world charm, including the original timber flooring. A new Exhibition opens the first Friday of the month (except January), with artists attracted from throughout the State. A light supper is served and a local cellar door offers wine tasting. Usually, the exhibiting artists are on hand to discuss their works. As well, a 'Kids Korner' features art work from local schools. Works of pottery, silversmithing, ceramics and other arts and crafts are also displayed for sale. The recent addition of a workroom has allowed for the scheduling of children's art classes and various workshops for adults.

Looking for a shady place to have lunch or let the children run free for a while? Dingo Creek Park, on the northern outskirts of Wondai, is the ideal stopping point. With lots of open space, shady trees, a covered children's play area, free electric barbecues, covered tables and benches, it is a great spot to picnic or take a break from driving. In good seasons the creek runs, attracting lots of bird life. On public holidays, over long weekends and during school holidays, a Driver Reviver station operates in the Park.

South Burnett Region Timber Industry Museum

Opened in November 2001, the Museum showcases the history of the South Burnett's timber industry, which underpinned the early settlement of the region and has continued to play an important part in its development. The traditional timber structure is flanked by life-size sculptures of a bullocky and his head bullocks, an old water-well and post-and-rail fence. On the eastern end of the building is the stainless steel silhouette of a timber cutter. Inside, the wagon camp diorama, complete with restored bullock wagon, effectively captures the spirit of those involved in the felling and logging of timber in the early 1900s. Set against authentic wooden slabs and shingles, are displays of South Burnett timbers, artifacts and photos pertaining to the early timber industry in the region. A well stocked Gift Shop, featuring locally produced woodcraft, forms part of the incorporated Visitor Information Centre. In the Woodcrafters' Workshop, constructed beside the Museum in 2003, local woodworkers regularly demonstrate their skills. A display of over 100 wooden mushrooms highlights the variety of timbers available.

No waiting at this hospital! Part of the Museum comprises the original Wondai Hospital operating theatre, built in 1929. The Museum is also home to the town's Manual Telephone Exchange and a 1924 Dennis fire engine, used to help fight the "Great Fire" at the Kingaroy peanut silos in 1951. The "Eric Radunz-Vince Miller Slab Barn", complete with shingle roof, and a restored Cream Shed full of memorabilia relating to the dairy industry are also sited within the grounds. The "Vince Miller Collection", comprising over 300 tools and artifacts, is another drawcard. Among the articles in the War Memorial Cabinet is an historic bugle which was played at the Japanese First Army Surrender to the Australians aboard ‘HMAS Rockhampton' in the Dutch East Indies in 1945. A complete set of "South Burnett Times" dating from 1962 to present day. The former Oddfellows Hall, built in 1932, also forms part of the Museum complex, displaying interesting household displays, as well as a barber's shop, early dentist's chair, lino-type machines and travelling film projectors pertaining to early businesses and entertainment venues in the town.

This distinctive flat-topped ridge, shaped like an upturned boat, is a landmark near Murgon. Rising to a height of 589 metres, Boat Mountain is covered in dry rainforest with areas of open eucalypt forest. See panoramic views across the South Burnett - ripening crops forming a colourful tapestry across the surrounding countryside. This small park has four walking tracks. Capture views from two lookouts - Braithwaites (370 metres return) or Daniels Lookout (2.2 kilometre return) - or see impressive vine forest along Silburns Vine Scrub Walk (2.2 kilometres return) or the Boat Mountain circuit (1.8 kilometres return). To avoid being scratched by prickly shrubs, wear protective clothing. Naturalists, photographers and birdwatchers will also enjoy this park. Overnight camping is not permitted.

Whilst no accommodation or camping options will be available in the short term, the Dam is open for day use only 6am-6pm, with fishing and boating activities available to visitors. Bjelke-Petersen Dam is expected to return to full operation by August 2020. Bjelke-Petersen Dam, also known as Lake Barambah or BP Dam, is just 15 kilometres from Murgon, at Moffatdale in the South Burnett. It is a popular and well-equipped area for recreational freshwater fishing, birdwatching, boating, picnicking and camping / caravanning. Picnic areas, barbecues, a general store, a caravan and recreation park and a boat ramp with a large car park make this the ideal place to relax for a day or extended stay. Bjelke-Petersen Dam covers 2,500 hectares, and holds 1,450,000 megalitres of water, which is used for irrigation and water supply to the towns of Murgon and Cherbourg. Koalas, wallabies and kangaroos can be seen around the lake while the birdlife includes black swans, ducks, pelicans and cormorants. Bjelke-Petersen Dam is a popular fesh water fishing spot. A stocked impound permit is required to fish. The dam is routinely stocked with Golden Perch (or Yellowbelly), Australian Bass and Silver Perch and you can also catch red claw (no permit required). Yallakool Camping and Recreation Park offers a number of accommodation options from powered and unpowered camp sites to cabins and villas....
