Located in the Ferry Park Complex is also the Clarence Coast Visitor Information Centre, together with a cafe with veranda seating overlooking the river. The iconic Maclean Tartan Power Poles were instigated by the Maclean Scottish Town Association in the year 2000 to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch which was to be conveyed through the township of Maclean. The designs attracted so much favourable comment that there was ongoing considerable public demand for "Family Tartans" to be painted. Hence the Tartan Power Pole painting was carried on through the main street and extended from there so that today they have an avenue of tartan poles in and around the streets of the main town, extending from the Harwood Bridge to the southern approach to Maclean at Ferry Park. All tartan designs have been painted by resident Maclean artist Linda El Mir. The Clarence Coast Visitor Information Centre at Ferry Park and the Scottish Shop in Maclean have free maps with locations of the (over 200) Power Poles with Clan Tartans.

The Maclean Bicentennial Museum is one of very few purpose-built museums in rural Australia. The excellent design enables visitors to easily understand and enjoy the range of special displays. There are delightful replicas of an early school room and an early hospital ward plus many regularly changing exhibitions. The museum offers a very interesting insight into early Australian lifestyles and the experience extends well beyond the boundaries of the Clarence River. The Stone Cottage, in the same grounds, was built by Johann George Schaefer after 1879 using sandstone quarried from the site. It became the local museum in 1973 and since the opening of its big brother in 1988 it has been returned to a "living history" replica of a typical home from the turn of the century. It contains many working models.

The reserve has long been Maclean's Scenic Lookout and largely undisturbed with the exception of the cleared area surrounding the lookout, the area adjacent to the communications tower and the Pinnacle. Maclean Lookout Reserve has a high level of historical value in terms of being the site for the town Scenic Lookout where the community have traditionally enjoyed views of the Clarence River, Lake Wooloweyah and the hinterland. The view from the Lookout gives a perspective of the flood plain, estuarine and coastal connection.

Maclean Lions Club Billy Cart Derby

The Maclean Lions Club Billy Cart Derby is gearing up for another successful outing down the hills of the Maclean Showground! There are three age groups and two classes of billy carts that contestants can compete in. Age groups are eight to 11 years, 12 to 16 years, and Open. Billy Cart Classes are Soapbox, where wheel sizes are a maximum of 300 millimetres in diameter, some form of steering and some form of braking is present; and Open Class, which must have some form of braking. Both classes must have a maximum 1.2 metre wheel width, a maximum 2.1 metre wheel base and no dangerous protrusions. All carts must have four wheels. All drivers must wear a motorcycle helmet, gloves, overalls or long sleeved shirt, long trousers and closed in footwear. Scrutineering of carts begins at 9am, with the first race kicking off at 10am....

Any visitor to Sandon – who’s come from the Brooms Head direction – will see the village on the south side of Sandon River and wonder how in the world you get there, because clearly there isn’t a bridge! Sandon Village is pretty unique in this regard. The number of non-4WD vehicles in Sandon Village is exactly zero, because the only way to get there is along the Sandon Back Trail from Illaroo to the south. This trail takes in a stretch of beach, so that is serious 4WD access. Anyway, Sandon Village backs on to Clay Head, and as you’d imagine in a place that’s legitimately challenging to reach, (your correspondent paddled across Sandon River on his surfboard, careful not to get his camera wet) Clay Head is a lovely, lonely, and spooky-but-in-a-nice-way place. The coves beneath Clay Head are jagged but picturesque affairs with grassy foreshores and pebbly beaches, and when the headland eventually spills down to the south-facing back beach, you can still feel vulnerable and humbled by one of the more rugged and desolate stretches of Clarence coast....

First things first, the 10 kilometres of unsealed road from Brooms Head to Sandon can be a jarring affair. Dental fillings have been loosened and car suspensions have been known to cry out in horror, but patience is rewarded when you eventually approach the Sandon River campground, with the river to your right, and glimpses of beach coming into view on your left. Sandon beach is sublime and stretches north to Brooms Head in the distance, Plover Island protects the beach for swimmers, there are gentle waves for novice surfers, and the river is gorgeous. Speaking of the road in, legend has it that a long time ago, when a rare alignment of sand off Plover Island created a temporary, excellent surf break, the local road-grader – himself a surfer – was contracted to smoothen the road. Which he duly did, but left the first 400 metres rough as guts for a few days longer, to deter would-be visitors....

If you love beach hiking then the moderate Brooms Head to Illaroo section of Yuraygir coastal walk is for you. Take in sweeping stretches of golden beaches and protected woodlands of paperbarks. There are scenic coastal views at the southern end of Brooms Head Beach which are ideal for whale watching and dolphin spotting. At low tide, explore Plover Island, which holds great cultural significance for the Yaegl People. Middens and artefacts have been discovered in the area and information about these can be found on the island. Sandon River, around the halfway lunch break mark, is the northernmost point of Solitary Islands Marine Park, which runs south for 75 kilmetres to Muttonbird Island at Coffs Harbour. The small settlement of Sandon, on the south side of the river, is made up of only about 35 dwellings....
