This picturesque beach is 900 metres long and backed by sand dunes and a large parkland area ideal for family picnics and gatherings. This beach proves to be popular as the nearby caravan park houses many visitors all year round. Bulli is located 11 kilometres north of the Wollongong central business district. The Surf Club is located just to the south of the northern rocks. A small creek crosses south of the club house and backs the northern half of the beach. The southern half is more accessible from Woonona. A bike path runs behind the beach linking Bulli with Woonona Beach.

Bulli Black Diamond Heritage Centre is located at the Bulli Railway Station. The museum's focus is the preservation of the 1887 Bulli Railway buildings. On display is the South Bulli Number Two steam locomotive imported in 1888 and used until the early 1960's. The centre has a collection of maps and objects relating to local mining life and the Bulli Mine which once operated on the escarpment. The Bulli Mine was the first source of coal, colloquially known as black diamond. The Blinkco Room shows the social history of the area. School children enjoy seeing the difference in life in the 1930's to their life now. The Cockatoo Run commences its journey in Sydney and travels along the spectacular Illawarra route to Wollongong. The journey from Sydney offers spectacular coastal scenery prior to the ascent of the Illawarra Escarpment. The line climbs 600 metres through rainforests, past waterfalls and the spectacular viaduct. The train makes a stop at Summit Tank to admire the view over Lake Illawarra out to the Tasman Sea.

The historic Southern Highland township of Robertson 'Green Heart of the Southern Highlands' with its old town atmosphere and rustic appeal is generally a great tourist stopover in which to spend some time. You have the choice of detraining here or alternatively continuing onto Moss Vale.

The Volunteer Carriage Attendants will welcome you onboard the train which is hauled by one of the heritage diesel locomotives and consists of fully restored 1930s and 1940s carriages. The buffet car offers light refreshments and souvenirs.

Bulli Black Diamond Museum Heritage Centre is located at the 1887 State Heritage listed Bulli Railway Station. South Bulli Mine's Number 2 steam locomotive (circa 1888) is on display - used until the early 1960s. The museum's focus is preserving the 1887 Railway Station buildings, which house a display of local railway and coal-mining heritage, including the old Coal Jetty. Colonists discovered coal, 'Black Diamond', locally in 1797. 76 years later, in 1863, mining commenced at Old Bulli, site of Australia's second worst disaster in 1887, where 81 perished. The museum houses a collection of maps and objects relating to local mines and mining life - including heritage photos of Bulli, its old coaching inns (The Denmark), nearby villages (Thirroul, Austinmer et cetera including Sherbrooke). The Blinkco Family Room shows social history, with contents from the Blinkco's Woonona home. School children enjoy comparing life in the 1930s to theirs today.

Austinmer Beach

Austinmer Beach is one of Wollongong's most popular beaches, located just 25 minutes north of the central business district. Austinmer is well set up to cater to large summer crowds being patrolled September to April. It is located off Lawrence Hargrave Drive, with shops lining the western side and a large car park and park between the beach and the Drive. The Surf Club and other amenities occupying the southern half of this 250 metre long beach. Two large rock pools lie on the southern rock platform. The relatively small beach is wedged between two low headlands and their extensive rock platforms. It receives waves averaging 1.4 metres, which result in two strong permanent rips against the rocks at each end. Austinmer Beach is not dog friendly. However, Little Austinmer Beach located directly to the north is an off lead dog friendly beach.

Coledale Beach

Coledale Beach offers a campers haven with a reserve right on the beach edge. There are fantastic views of the waves, and both ends of the beach are closed in with rock formations. Coledale Beach is located 18 kilometres north of the Wollongong central business district. This beach is only patrolled from the commencement of the NSW school holidays in September until the end of the April school holidays. North Wollongong Beach is the only beach in the area that is patrolled all year round. Coledale Beach is not a dog friendly zone, however, Sharkey's Beach located to the south is an off-lead dog friendly beach.

Scarborough Beach

Situated in the small northern coast town of Scarborough, this small beach offers fantastic views of the coastline and the cliffs that lie above. There are parklands close by for families to use for picnicking. Scarborough is located 21 kilometres north of Wollongong central business district. Scarborough Beach occupies an area of more moderate slope. Down the slope towards the beach are a few houses, a small picnic area, and the surf club. Car parking is limited to the roads and is a problem in summer. Scarborough Beach is an Orange Zone/Time Sharing Dog beach. Time sharing zones allow dog access on the beach on leash in summer before 9am and after 6pm and in winter before 9am and after 4pm.

This beach offers fantastic views south to Wollongong with distant views of the two light houses and harbour. It is a popular spot, especially for students being so close to the university accommodation in Fairy Meadow, as well as families who are staying at the nearby tourist park, Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort. Fairy Meadow is located five kilometres from Wollongong central business district. Fairy Meadow Beach is only patrolled during the NSW school holidays,between September until the end of the April school holidays. North Wollongong Beach is the only beach in the area that is patrolled all year round. Fairy Meadow is a Time Share Dog zone. Time sharing zone allows access on the beach on leash in summer before 9am and after 6pm and in winter before 9am and after 4pm. The beach south of the play equipment is an off lead dog beach.

Corrimal Beach is 1.4 kilometres long and backed by fenced sand dunes, grassy reserves and caravan park. Holiday makers and local's alike enjoy this beach as it is long and private. A small lagoon proves popular with children for shallow paddling. Corrimal is located six kilometres north of Wollongong's central business district. Corrimal Beach is only patrolled from the commencement of the NSW school holidays in September until the end of the April school holidays. Beach fishing is one of the many activities one can take part in or explore the many rock formations during low tide. There is plenty of parking and barbecues are available. Ideal for families, North Wollongong Beach has rock pools, wading areas, and good surf. There is plenty of grass, shade, and picnic booths. A children's playground is close by, and shops, cafes and amenities are provided. North Wollongong Beach is a great place for a barbecue with full facilities provided. It also has a bike and walking track, and free parking. North Wollongong Beach is not a dog friendly beach, however simply cross the lagoon to the north to find the off lead dog area. Dogs are permitted on the walk ways and cycle tracks.
