New South Wales Tourism - The whole family will love cheering and waving from the steam or diesel train as it travels past the station and navigates its way through the quiet bushland setting in Albion Park. The museum has three rides to choose from being the main line, bay road or miniature rides that let the children experience a piece of Australia’s narrow gauge industrial railway history restored and in service, and also there is The Ken McCarthy Museum Building museum building to look at and the historic Yallah Station and the Former Otford Signal Box, these historical artefacts had been enjoyed at by their parents and grandparents alike. Food & Souvenirs are available in the tramway dining car, the grounds of the museum are a great place to escape to that trip back in time; the kids can play in the playground while the adults relax in the barbecue area. Train operating days when the Museum is in full operation including demonstrations are from 10am to 4pm are held on the second Sunday of each month, Sundays of Public Holiday weekends and the fourth Sunday of January. The steep sandstone ridges and gullies are topped by cliffs, and the park supports heathland, woodland, tall open forest and significant rainforest areas. It is an excellent bushwalking and picnicking area, with spectacular scenery and waterfalls. Starting at the base of Macquarie Pass at the picnic area, you can walk to the Cascades Waterfall (two kilometres return).

Budderoo National Park is located on 7,120 hectares, five kilometres west of Jamberoo. The park is home to Minnamurra Rainforest Centre, a multi award winning tourism destination which allows you to explore the rainforests that once blanketed the Illawarra region. Boardwalks and paved tracks take you along the forest floor and up through a range of rainforest environments, on your way to the magical Minnamurra Falls. The lookouts and picnic areas at Carrington Falls, where the Kangaroo River plunges over the escarpment, are well worth a visit. Barren Grounds Nature Reserve is located on one of the most southerly plateaus of the Sydney Basin and has been a protected area for over 40 years. Surrounding the reserve is an escarpment of sandstone approximately 230-250 million years old which forms the bedrock. The reserve contains a wide variety of habitats including heath, woodland and tall forest. Excellent bushwalking gives walkers fantastic views of the Illawarra coastline and surrounding countryside. Picnic facilities are located here. Barren Grounds is home to a diverse array of wildlife including the threatened Ground Parrot, Eastern Bristlebird, the Long-nosed Potoroo and more than 500 species of plants. Located at the top of Jamberoo pass this 1750 hectare nature reserve is an established bird watcher's mecca. Walks include Griffiths Track, an eight kilometre walk through woodlands and heath. Minnamurra Rainforest Centre is a multi-award winning nature based destination, and is one of the best examples of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest that once covered vast areas of the Illawarra region.

This rainforest is situated in Budderoo National Park which is less than two hours drive south of Sydney, located 15 kilometres west of Kiama on the NSW South Coast.

The centre offers visitors the opportunity to experience the rainforest area via a network of raised walkways and paved tracks. The 'Loop Walk' is a 1.6 kilometre walk (45-minutes duration) which meanders through a diversity of rainforest types.

The 2.6 kilometres (return) 'Falls Walk' will lead you safely along the canyon cliff edge to the Upper Minnamurra Falls. This walk is slightly more challenging and will require an additional one hour walk time.

Total of both walks is 4.2 kilometre and visitors should allow two hours to do both.

Kiama's famous Blowhole is the largest in the world! A viewing platform with disabled access gives good views of Kiama blowhole. This landmark has attracted people to the region for over 100 years, was first sighted by George Bass when he anchored his whale boat in the sheltered bay, now known as Kiama harbour, in December 1797. It is estimated that 600,000 people visit the Blowhole per year to view the spectacular plumes of water that can be seen when the seas are running from the south east. Only a short distance from the town centre and railway station, the Kiama blowhole has picnic areas and rock pool nearby. The Beach and Bush Cafe, Visitors Information Centre and toilets are also located nearby and are open 9am to 5pm.

Carrington Falls - Jamberoo, a spectacular waterfall, drops 50 metres down into a gorge into Kangaroo Valley. Located in the Budderoo National Park, well developed walks exist with access to several lookouts including a track for the disabled. The loop walk takes about 25 minutes to complete, and from the lower car park you can reach Nellies Glen picnic area, and walk a further 50 metres to a beautiful spot with a natural pool. A second car park is located on the northern side of Carrington Falls. Loop Walk starts from northern car park off Jamberoo Mountain Road, 18 kilometres west of Jamberoo Post Office, follow tourist drive nine from Kiama. Maps and walking guides are available from the Kiama Visitor's Centre. Carrington Falls is located 50 minutes west of Kiama up the Jamberoo Mountain Road.

History may not have remembered Nellie so well, but one thing's for sure: she knew a good picnic spot when she saw it. Soak up the oxygen laden air while being soothed by the sounds of nearby waterfalls. You can relax under the shade of magnificent eucalyptus forest. The Rainforest Loop Walk - and its longer cousin, the Falls Walk - is an easy introduction to rainforests. The elevated timber boardwalk makes it a cinch, while also providing a literal bird's-eye view of one of the best examples of subtropical and warm temperature rainforests in the state. Walking distance: 1.6 kilometre Time: one hour Difficulty: easy. While the first 900 metres is suitable for all ages and abilities, there is a mid-section of the walk that does not offer wheelchair access. Budderoo National Park is near Kiama, a two-hour drive from Sydney. The walk begins and ends at the Minnamurra Rainforest Visitor Centre.

Park your car at Saddleback Mountain Lookout (six kilometres south west of Kiama) and follow the green marking posts west, up the escarpment to Mount Noorinan. This track was originally used to transport produce to Kiama for shipping in the 1800s, and at one point stretched all the way west to Bowral. Birdwatching is popular, keep an eye out for crimson rosellas, eastern bristlebird, and the golden whistler. Wear sensible shoes as the track is steeply graded and becomes slippery at times. The track takes about two hours with a distance of seven kilometres for the return journey. The grade is moderate, though it can be very steep at times.

Located only a few minutes west of the Kiama Post Office, you will discover a wonderful example of rehabilitated wetlands. To get there follow Terralong Street towards Jamberoo, turn right into Dido Street, then Glenbrook Drive. The entrance to the park is from a small car park. Walk along the banks of Spring Creek to the lagoon through a variety of regenerating bushland or enjoy the birdlife from a constructed hide. You will numerous waterbirds and common bush birds. Located just three kilometres north of Kiama at the southern end of Jones Beach, this distinctive rock formation is part of the geologically fascinating coastline. Cathedral Rocks, has lured sightseers since 1890. These volcanic rocks, while intensely hard, have many joints. These joints have been eroded for many years, leaving these mysterious rock formations. The rocks may be viewed from Cliff Drive or studied from close range by approaching from the north. These rocks are a photographer's delight! Definitely worth a visit!

Take a walk through Bombo Headland, among the unusual basalt columns - it feels like you're on the moon! The basalt walls and columns are a legacy of blue metal quarrying in the 1880s and 1900s. Take a look north and you will see the award winning Cathedral Rocks, Minnamurra Headland and Jones' Beach. Look south and you can see an impressive view of Kiama. Bombo Headland is a great surfing beach and is dog friendly. The beach is often featured in television commercials and photo shoots. A walking guide for the Headland and Dog's Off Leash brochure is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre (Blowhole Point Road, Kiama). It is located off Cliff Drive, take the Kiama Downs turn off from the Princess Highway, and cross under railway bridge at Bombo Beach.

Historic Dry Stone Walls

Stone walls are evident throughout the area, many constructed more than a century ago as paddocks were cleared for cropping and stock agistment. Fine examples can be seen in the hills and dales west of Kiama township, with much of the work being attributed to Thomas Newing - a most prolific and skilled stone wall builder who worked in the area for over 60 years. The building method developed by Newing uses the local volcanic stone, and consists of two wall faces leaning against each other capped by a continuous row of larger stones. Nearly 400 stone walls have been listed as heritage items in the Kiama municipality. The walls that occur along the Saddleback Mountain Road have been repaired or reconstructed by volunteers using the traditional methods.
